A well orchestrated advertising campaign is, often times, a thing of beauty. Timed ad rollouts and a playful tease here and there has your intended audience almost literally salivating in anticipation of your next bit of brilliance. Ultimately, the long awaited reveal not only satisfies the customer but calls them to action, putting a hard earned dollar down for the advertised good or service.
In contrast, an advertising campaign that skips ‘B’ on the path from ‘A’ to ‘D’ can deflate the entire enterprise, disappointing the creative team and intended audience, alike. A misfire in a campaign also has the unintended consequence of hurting a product partner who sells their wares at multiple retailers. While the world’s most profitable company behind the hottest mobile product in history will likely survive a gaffe by one of their premier retail partners, the loss of any full cost sales is never preferred.
The genius team at Sam’s Club may have inadvertently depressed sales of Apple’s new iPhone 6 when a stellar promotion for the hottest smartphone of all time was accidentally leaked on Monday, November 3. As noted over at Boy Genius Report in an article entitled ‘Whatever You Do, Don’t Buy An iPhone 6 Right Now,’ Sam’s Club, in anticipation of the coming Black Friday, had an ad leak that advertised the sales price of the 16GB iPhone 6 at $99 with a two-year service agreement. The 32GB and 64GB models will be made available at $199 and $299, respectively.
Mistakes such as this made by power players like Apple and Sam’s Club amount to little more than annoyances, unlikely to send either into a catastrophic spiral thanks to diminished early sales. Small to mid-sized companies, on the other hand, can’t afford to make too many missteps when it comes to their partners and clients. Timing and relevancy is everything. Advertising too early or too late costs businesses the opportunity to generate more revenue.
